If a million Americans wanted to take action to reform the food system, what would you tell them to do?

Spend your money on local foods and with local chefs. Fighting the system will not be as effective as creating a new system which makes the old one obsolete. Grubly connects people who love to eat with people who love to cook, locally. Help build a better food system at www.gogrubly.com

      • Get Monsanto out of business

Monsanto is a big part of the destruction of sane agriculture. By creating crops meant to be grown in monoculture fields, creating seeds that can't be harvested, and patenting genetics, Monsanto is almost single handedly destroying generations of knowledge and practice for sustainable agriculture.

              • Reprioritize Subsidies and Food Transparency

At its core, the American subsidization of food is perverse. It is "infinitely" cheaper to get the same number of calories from "junk food" than it is to get healthy calories from fruits and vegetables. Subsidize fruits and vegetables, particular organic produce, and not only will Americans reduce their "environmental footprint," but they will also like reduce their health care bill. According to the Society of Actuaries, obesity costs the US about $300 billion/year. As the saying goes, "You are what you eat," and right now it is hard to eat healthy food in American, thus it makes it more…

                • Don't eat meat, chicken or eggs grown in CAFO's.

If you don't know where your meat or chicken or eggs come from, it probably comes from a CAFO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentrated_Animal_Feeding_Operations). Take a look at pictures and then decide if you want to eat that.

                  • Ask your Congressperson to reduce or eliminate corn subsidies

It's politically controversial, but little worth doing is easy. Few things would have a greater impact on the environment and public health than reducing or eliminating the subsidy and the weird incentives it creates.

The Farm Bill influences if not determines what we eat in the U.S., the cost of food, and so much more. But it isn't that widely discussed in mainstream media. Why? Get to know it, and get out the vote!

                        • Stop buying from non-sustainable food sources

Let the market speak - Only buy from local, sustainable, humane, environmentally-friendly sources whenever possible. Money spent on food from these sources is money taken away from conventional sources, and that's one way to get the policy makers to take notice and initiate changes.

Rather than ship tomatoes and lettuces across the continent, let's grow them on the roofs of supermarkets, cutting time, distances and costs from the food supply chain. www.brightfarmsystems.com

                            • Learn where your food comes from. Ask questions.

Whenever you have food, ask the question, "Where did this food come from?" "How was it raised?", especially at the supermarket, butcher, restaurants and cafes. You not only learn how your food was grown / raised and make better decisions about what you eat, but you also start a dialogue with the other side and learn as well as educate.

                                        • Pressure FDA to regulate antibiotics in livestock diet

Concentrated animal feedlot systems depends critically on antibiotics to enable raising livestock intensively. Sharply regulating antibiotics would curb these unhealthy and environmentally unsound practices and potentially even unravel the entire feedlot system.
